Worked Example

Example: 14ร—18 ft room, 10% waste, 22 sq ft/box. Room area = 252 sq ft; With waste = 277.2 sq ft; Boxes = ceil(277.2รท22) = 13 boxes

How much flooring for a 12ร—15 room?

180 sq ft + 10% waste = 198 sq ft. At 20 sq ft/box = 10 boxes.

How do I find sq ft per box?

Check the box label for 'Coverage: XX sq ft'. Common: laminate 15โ€“22, LVP 18โ€“25, hardwood 12โ€“20 sq ft.

How much waste to add?

Straight lay: 5โ€“8%. Diagonal or herringbone: 10โ€“15%. Irregular rooms: 10โ€“15%.

Can I return unused boxes?

Many stores accept unopened returns within 90 days. Keep 1 box for future repairs.

Do I measure to wall or baseboard?

Measure to the wall. Flooring installs under or next to the baseboard including a 1/4-inch expansion gap.
